Happy weekend, lovelies!!
Today I am sharing with you the highlight of our trip, and that was a weekend spent in Östringen and Heidelberg. We stayed in Östringen, a town twenty minutes south of Heidelberg, in a wine hotel called Weinlust. A small, wonderful hotel with a delicious restaurant and their own vino. We spent the night in Östringen and then took a day trip to Heidelberg to sight see. The city itself is over 1,000 years old, dating back to the Middle Ages, I’ll let the pictures do all the talking!

We walked out of the castle and over to the extensive gardens. Waterfalls, flats grounds, it was beautiful! There were quite a few weddings that had taken place right there in the castle that day, we saw numerous brides having their pictures taken. Quite the fairy tale wedding!!
You can see some of the destruction (and reconstruction) done to the castle behind me, it was destroyed by the French during the War of Succession.
Remember when I mentioned that these shoes were my walk-around shoes? This was the type of “sidewalk” or street that we walked on throughout the town. Lets just say that I had numerous blisters on the backs of my heels at the end of the day :(.
We stopped for lunch at this Hofbrauhaus, pretty decent beer and amazing food!
Later we had a snack which are the pictures below….
These are called Schneeballen, which literally means snowballs. They are truffle-like sweets made with a waffle cone-like consistency, and they come in different flavors. We split the hazelnut, and let’s just say there were leftovers. It’s the size of a softball!
Heidelberg was AMAZING!!! Super gorgeous with the old buildings mixed with some new. The castle was beautiful, and very old, most of it was being rebuilt after it was destroyed. I heard SO many different languages being spoken in Heidelberg, it is quite the tourist city! No joke, the percentage of people by nationality was probably 1/3 American, 1/3 Chinese, and 1/3 German. There is an army base located near Heidelberg, which explains why there were so many Americans in the city.
With Heidelberg being in the state of Baden-Württemberg in the southern portion of Germany, the accents of the native speakers made it quite difficult to understand what was being said! I am used to hearing Hochdeutsch, “High German”, which is what the north portion of Germany speaks and what is officially taught in schools, but I had quite a difficult time understanding what was being said to me. The dialect was different, as well as the pronunciation of a lot of words made them almost unrecognizable to me. Even my husband had a difficult time understanding them and he is a native speaker!
After spending over four hours walking around the picturesque city and doing a little bit of shopping, we headed back to our hotel. We took a little nap (or, attempted to…with no A/C and it being over 85 degrees, it was nearly impossible to fall asleep!), and then we freshened up and headed downstairs to eat at the hotel restaurant. Let’s just say dinner was to DIE for!
I had salad and shrimp in a tomato pesto over avocado. It literally was the best meal I have ever tasted!

I love that you took a picture of the beds! One of my favorite things traveling in and near Germany are the down comforters and how they fold it to make the bed. It looks so clean and neat! Your pictures are amazing and they make me want to visit again! Germany is such a beautiful country.
