Happy Tuesday, friends, and it’s almost February!
Last Sunday, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend a floral arranging workshop with a fabulous group of Lexington bloggers, at Alexandra Pallos Floral & Events! Let me just say that other than purchasing the occasional bouquet of flowers and arranging them in a vase once I get home, I had had ZERO floral arranging experience prior to this workshop. The very first thing I did, before I walked into the workroom, was to make a stop by the delicious charcuterie boards that FĂȘte Boards provided for the workshop…yum!!
As I walked into the workroom, long worktables with huge containers of fresh blooms and greenery greeted me, along with vases of different shapes and sizes. Such a refreshing and cheery sight, in this drab and dreary winter! Alexandra instructed our group to choose a “vessel that spoke to us”, and find a spot where we would like to work. Once we settled in, she introduced each type of flower and greenery she had picked out for us, the best way to place the flowers in our vase, and how to care for our arrangements to make them last longer. She emphasized the importance of snipping apart and placing individual blooms (versus the whole bunch) into the vessel (and how if we didn’t like something, to just take it out and try something else!). She explained that by mixing different textures and placing the blooms and greenery at difference depths, we could create arrangements that were visually interesting without appearing busy.
I first began with an image of a fountain as my inspiration, buuut I struggled to put together what I was picturing in my head. Alexandra made a couple stops by my station when I was stuck, and Tiff also came by to help when I couldn’t figure out what to do with drooping flowers (tip: prop them up with a piece of greenery!).
My flowers did not turn out quite as well as I had envisioned–and it was hard not to look around at all the beautiful and diverse arrangements that the other ladies had made, and compare mine. But, isn’t that the beauty of diversity and talent? Not one arrangement was like another, and each person had different levels of experience and talent, going into the workshop. Of course mine wasn’t going to look as exquisite as Tiff’s, she actually interned, for a few years, in a floral shop!
If you are looking for something unique to do for a birthday, bachelorette, or bridal party, or want to attend a class on your own, there are both public and private workshops available! Public workshops are held every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday (you can see the upcoming classes and sign up here!), and private workshops are available by request. Each class includes complimentary beverages, wine and champagne, as well as appetizers; and no need to bring your own vase or flowers–everything is provided for you! During the workshop, Alexandra will walk you through how to pick out your vase, choose your flowers, and the best way to arrange them in your vessel. Whether you attend a workshop solo, with a significant other, or your best gal pal, you are in for a treat, and are sure to leave with not only a beautiful arrangement, but a new hobby and skills to go with it.
Thank you to Sarah of Space, Place & Southern Grace, Alex of Alexandra Floral & Events, and Sara & Lauren of FĂȘte Boards for putting together this workshop!
Stay Classy!
