Happy Monday, lovelies!
I am so excited to share this post with you, I’ve had many questions about how to wear this gorgeous but gigantic plaid blanket scarf from Zara (long sold out, identical here!). It has affectionately been nicknamed the “blanket scarf”, and for good reason (as I am typing this, I am using it as such)! This scarf, when unfolded, measures 53″ on all sides, so if you’re snuggling around a bonfire or enjoying a fall football game, throw it over your lap and share with your honey!
Today I am going to show you Three Ways to wear this scarf. They are pretty easy, and are pretty good at not making the scarf feel overwhelming when being worn. I’m a pretty tiny person (just under 5’2), so the scarf ends up being just the right size when I tie it. 🙂 Oh, and did I mention that it is THE softest scarf that you will ever wear??? Not even joking.
THREE WAYS TO WEAR A BLANKET SCARF
Before you begin, you will need to start out with your scarf in a triangle for all three of these styles. A pretty quick and dirty way of achieving said triangle without having to lay it out flat and fold it is to grab one of the corners and let the scarf hang down.
Now that you have your triangle, you will grip the scarf with one hand and slide it along the scarf, followed by the other hand, until you have it held in both hands in front of you as shown. You are now ready to move on to the rest of the directions!
Great! Now that your scarf is ready, let’s get started with the different styles we will try the Half Tied, Turtleneck, and the Braided.
Style #1: Half-tied
Directions:
1). Start out with your triangle grasped with both hands in front of you (don’t worry if it’s twisted, it will add to the look).
2). With the scarf in front of your neck, rap it around once so that both ends now hang in front on either side.
3). Grasp the ends and tighten so that they are long and easy to tie.
4-6). Cross the ends and pull one end under and through the loop (like you’re tying your shoes).
7). Let the ends flop down and loosen the part around your neck a little, and arrange the scarf so that the ends dangle evenly (or unevenly if you prefer).
Sometimes, I don’t loosen the part around my neck too much because I want a little space between the top and bottom part of the scarf, like in picture 6.
Style #2: Turtleneck
Directions: Like the other styles, you will start out with the scarf wrapped around your neck once/
1). Pull the ends so that they are longer but not as long as in the half-tied scarf.
2-3). With this scarf, you are actually going to tie a knot with the ends.
4). Tuck the knot up underneath the rest of the scarf
5). Loosen the scarf around your neck to your likeness, to allow the corners to hang down. on top of each other.
When I first styled my Zara scarf in this post, I actually situated the knot so that it peaked out from underneath the scarf, and then I separated the two corners so that they were overlapping but both were visible. This fluffed the scarf up just a little bit more and made the corners hang down longer in the front.
Style #3: Braided
Directions: mirror my motions in the photos
1). You’re going to begin with a triangle and wrap it around your neck just like in the first style, but instead of pulling the ends long, you want the loop to hang down as long as the ends.
2). Take the loop and twist it once
3-4). Stick one hand through the opening while you grasp one end with the other hand. Take that end and go under and pull through the loop. Release
5-6). Take the other loop and feed it over and through the loop. Release.
7). You should have one end sticking out of the front of the loop and the other end sticking out of the back.
I recently Instagrammed a picture of me wearing my scarf braided and got LOTS of requests to demonstrate how it’s done. My awesome manager actually showed me this fun way of tying a scarf, and I thought it would be the perfect way to make the scarf appear less bulky.
This diagram I found on Pinterest that might be helpful if it is difficult to see from the pictures how to tie it.
Play around with the directions! Remember, it is all about how you want your scarf to look; loose around the neck and hanging down longer, big and puffy with your hair in a bun. If you’d prefer a chunky circle around your neck, tie two ends together before you start, and then loop the scarf around just like you would with an infinity scarf. Seriously, this scarf can be tied so many ways, I am still experimenting with it!
I hope this post gave you some ideas for how to handle your giant blanket scarf, or any scarf that you have! Or if you do not have a blanket scarf but have been waiting to see how it might be styled before purchasing it (great idea!), hopefully this convinced you that it is worth getting. I have worn this over coats and jackets while I’m out running errands, I wore this outfit with the scarf braided to run errands Wednesday evening and to school last Friday (I unashamedly repeat outfits), the scarf is just about as versatile as a smaller scarf. The price may be a little high for a scarf, but considering how much I’ve already worn it, the price per wear has definitely paid for itself!
Have a great week, everyone!!
What is your favorite way to tie a scarf?
Such a great post! LOVE the scarf, by the way. And I love how you paired it with the green sweater and black Torys. Perfect look! 🙂

I purchased this scarf from Zara last season. I have put it on several times, however, never seem to leave the house wearing it. I love the scarf on everyone else, but feel like it overwhelms my 5'2" frame (quite possibly because I have shorter hair). Thanks for the tips, can't wait to give these a try.
I'm so behind on this blanket scarf thing. I have one, but I just couldn't get it right. Thanks for your easy to follow tips! xo
